Central Saint Martins — Experimental Shapes Project

Studio Omotoso is working with final-year Fashion Knit students at Central Saint Martins on an experimental project exploring the relationship between shape, material, the body and creative risk.

Drawing on selected projects from Monisola Omotoso’s Wearable Art practice, the project encourages students to consider how ideas can be translated into dynamic three-dimensional forms through experimentation, pattern, silhouette and knitted fabric.

Over three weeks, students are challenged to develop an original shape, toile or outfit that is new, exciting, innovative and experimental. Rather than beginning with a predetermined outcome, they are encouraged to research widely, gather visual and material references, experiment, take risks and allow their ideas to evolve.

The project places particular emphasis on the relationship between experimental knitted swatches and three-dimensional form. Students develop knitted samples alongside their shape explorations, considering how material qualities can influence, respond to or transform the silhouette.

The process culminates in the presentation of at least one completed shape or outfit, predominantly using knitted fabric, presented on the body for critique.

For Studio Omotoso, the project reflects the studio's wider approach to research, making and knowledge exchange: using experimentation as a way of moving from an initial idea towards an unexpected material outcome.
